The Crack seems a bit pricey to me at 430 for the kit considering it comes with cheap parts and the price of the Chinese amps - which commercial alternative is there, assembled, or alas, a kit ? 1st pic is supposedly the Crack OTL 2nd is one of the few generic amps I could find on Aliexpress which has a transformer and comes with a schematic. Bottlehead is unique in what it offers, it#x27;s an itch only a bottlehead kit can scratch. Myself, I#x27;ll go solo to satisfy the need, the schematic research has been so much fun over the past months. The schematic is shown in Fig. 1. The topology is the same as the hybrid tube/MOSFET line amp. Q1 is a double triode that operates as a differential amplifier, with approximately 2mA in each of the triodes. A constant-current diode D1, which supplies the source current to the differential amp, includes two J508 or E-202 diodes in parallel. The Crack is a single-ended triode, output transformerless design for high-Z cans sold as a kit for 300, or 414 with a quot;Speedballquot; constant current p/s upgrade. The input tube is a 12AU7; the output is a 6080 dual triode or 6AS7, 5998, 421A, 7236. Swapping out the stock coupling caps with better #x27;lytics makes a big improvement.

And I observed a few things:-They don#39;t appear to be using a choke in the B line, something I see most of the time with other tube amplifiers.-No output transformer, okay they are designed for 120 ohms and higher impedance headphones but still quite a nice idea.

I#39;ve tried most of the the usual suspect and I#39;m currently running a Tung-sol 5998 and a CBS/Hytron 5814a in mine and lovin#39; every minute of it!
